Traditionally, foil is the first weapon taught to any beginning student. At Halberstadt, beginning classes are designed to give you the basics of fencing, such as footwork and holding the foil, understanding right-of-way, and basic offense and defense actions.  You’ll be introduced to all of the foil equipment.  You’ll learn basic footwork, including the advance, retreat and lunge; basic offense, including direct attacks and indirect attacks; and basic defense, including parries and ripostes.  In addition to the hands-on portion of the class, you’ll also be introduced to the concept of right-of-way, which is essential to scoring touches in foil.

Your coach will teach simple tactics and strategies to get you fencing almost immediately and you’ll hone your new skills during this beginning level class.  The class is designed around an 8 week syllabus but can be entered at the beginning of any month.  After your 8 weeks of class you may choose to repeat the class or move on to other classes we offer.

At Halberstadt, it’s never too late to start fencing!  If you’re ready to try it proceed to our shop and purchase one month of adult classes and then show up to the appropriate start date at 8:15pm.
